More Life drawing

Went back for another session of life drawing this week. Love it.

But drawings too big to scan easily, so here are a couple more from the first session.

Don't look Mum ! Rude bits !

The function of the overwhelming majority of your artwork is simply to teach you how to make the small fraction of your artwork that soars.

from Art and Fear - Ted Orland & David Bayles

Cyclist.

Couldn't see the bike and didn't feel up to making it up. Bikes are like rowing boats to draw. Your eye always knows when they aren't right.

Funny that.

People. out and about.

Hopefully, the last of the coats and hats for this year.

Although they are saying it will turn colder this weekend.

After hands... heads.

For a bit of hand eye co-ordination. See what I did there ? Did ya ? Did Ya ? What I did ? .....Oh never mind...

This guy knew I was sketching him and would not keep still. So I ended up with a page of false starts which I quite like.

Whereas this guy was so lost in tired daydreaming I think a meteor could have struck us all down and he would have been left blinking in the rubble saying " Sorry, I missed that ? "

This one was also done on the way home from life drawing, and it amuses me that I used pencil instead of my usual weapon of choice, pen. Like that was the mode I had been set on that night, and nothing was going to change that. Like I had gone back to the factory default settings. And I was conscious at the time I couldn't get the shading as dark as I wanted, but it didn't figure to me why until much later.

You need hands...

At the end of the life drawing session we did a series of two minute poses.

But I was brain fried by then and not up to the effort of trying to catch it all in such a short space of time, so I just concentrated on the model's hands.

Which is always a pleasure to do.

Life drawing or clothes don't maketh the man.

It has been seven years since I went to one. But last week I found a great life drawing class to go to.

It\s one of those things I always say, must do some more life drawing. And never do. So am mildly pleased that I got off my fat arse and found one.

Took a while to get into the pace of it, and I stood up to draw which was fine, until the next day when my shoulders ached like crazy. Getting old you see.

Three of the ones I am most pleased with. From towards the end of the session. The top two are five minute poses, the last one a ten minute pose.

I suppose these could be classified as NSFW.

At a push.

If you were prudish.

So apologies if so.

Clothes maketh the man

Saw the Humphrey Ocean works at the NPG over the weekend. Massively inspired by them.

And it made me realise how what we choose to wear says so much about us. Of course, I know if you see someone in a three piece suit you can safely assume they aren't off down the sewers. And they want you to know that.

But this went beyond that. How the anonymity of ordinary, everyday clothes still says so much. How even how you try to disappear says stuff about you.

This guy was on the train into town, and I was taken by his diagonal quilted jacket. What does that say about him?

What does that say about me ?

And then he made this brilliant pose.

Saturday 20 April 2013

Feet on seats

Caught, red footed.

Mind you, I am glad he did because it made for a great pose. I would have never drawn a knee that high up in relation to the rest of the body if I hadn't seen it.

And, of course, the by now ubiquitous i-phone.

Uh oh !

I have run out of sketches. Have been focused on other stuff lately and haven't kept up the sketching. And now I have run out.

So you will have to be content with this quick one of a railway worker in the distance.

It was done as a visual reminder. And is the only thing left that I have to amuse you, and myself, with.

Must get out more.

Quick shading

In response to market feedback !

Round up

Three from the last few weeks.

Still keeping warm

I loved this guy's fur hood. No real reason...

... it was just a great shape.

It was a Timberland coat. I know this because, look, I faithfully drew the logo. Does that count as advertising, have I just sold my soul ?

Naah. My soul was bartered for a bag of licorice years ago.

Sunday Girl

I know a girl, from a lonely street, cold as ice cream but still as sweet...

Sketched her on sunday... I know...I know...

Monday 1 April 2013

Beanies and ( easter ? ) Bonnets

Again, with the hats.

But it's been so cold of late, can you wonder at it.
